Beginning Sewing Series- Part 1: Understanding Simplicity Patterns

As I wait around for this baby girl to come out and play I've decided to start a new sewing series! I know... I know... my husband thinks I'm crazy too.... but I really do love making video tutorials for you all. It's fun!

This week's video is for Part 1 of this new beginner sewing series.  Many of you have suggested I offer a tutorial on how to understand and follow a commercial sewing pattern.  So, I listened... and here it is!

In Part 1 I walk you through the information found on the back of the pattern.  The pattern we will be using in this series is Simplicity 2290 from their Learn to Sew line of patterns.  It is for a simple pair of pants.  The one pattern includes the pieces for making it in kids/teens sizes and also teens/adults.  So it's a great place to start even if you won't be making them for yourself.

Thanks to Simplicity... this week I am also hosting a giveaway!  Two lucky winners will each get their own 2290 pattern to follow along in the sewing series.  The giveaway ends Friday, September 2, 2011.  For details on how to enter watch the video by CLICKING HERE.

p.s.- Remember that if you are reading this post in your email you won't see the video.  You need to either open the blog post as it appears on the actual blog page or CLICK HERE to watch the video.

Thank YOU and Giveaway winner announced!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I know I did.  We celebrated my DS's 2nd birthday and my DH's 32nd birthday! We spent the weekend grilling and swimming at our new farmhouse...enjoying nature and our little family. It was great!
My son loves his new salt water pool!  This was something new for us but I love how it doesn't feel like a regular chlorine pool.  It feels like plain old water. Weird but cool!

We even took our dog, Onyx, out there to get used to his new 5 acre yard!
After running everywhere he plopped down in the shade and concrete to cool off. Looks like every member of this family is loving the new place!

I also wanted to thank you all because my video tutorials have officially been viewed over 1 MILLION times all around the world! That is so insane to me! I haven't even been on YouTube for 2 years yet.  I really appreciate the love & support and I'm happy you all enjoy my tutorials.

THANK YOU!!

I'll leave you now with this week's video.... where I also announce last week's
Simplicity Bias Tape Maker
 machine giveaway!  Enjoy your week!

My first LIVE television interview!

AH!  I have so much going on right now... so exciting!

I wanted to do a quickie blog post to let you all know that the link to my first LIVE television interview is now online and ready for all to view.

The segment is called: Cashing in on YouTube: Turning your passion into a side business and consists of a 6:00 minute long interview with me!  Tory Johnson the host of ABC News Now's @Work show conducted the interview and I'm happy with the way it turned out.  I did ramble a little in some spots but overall I'm proud of it.

Thanks for watching!  Have a great weekend!

Baby Burp Cloth Tutorial & Bias Tape Maker GIVEAWAY!

First of all.... a HUGE thank you to everyone who wrote me about our farm house post last week! We are so excited with our new little homestead and all the adventures that are sure to follow!

This week brings a new video tutorial and a fabulous GIVEAWAY!

In this video post I show you how to make this easy little baby burp cloth out of flannel and quilting cotton fabrics.  The fun part is I also show you how to make your own single fold bias tape out of fabric and I use Simplicity Bias Tape Maker machine to save me time and any burning of my fingers!

I like to make my own bias tape because its a lot more fun than buying the boring solid colored ones at the store.  It allows you to really customize your projects.

A big thanks to Simplicity for providing the goodies for this week's giveaway!

One lucky winner will receive the items pictured below: One
Simplicity Bias Tape Maker
, a 1/4" single fold tip (for use with the machine), a 1 1/4" Quilting Binding tip (for use with the machine), and a Bias Tip Insertion Tool (for use with 1/8" and 1/4" bias strips).

Giveaway ends Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 5:00pm EST.  One random winner will be announced on next Monday's video tutorial.  Only valid YouTube entries are eligible to win.

We got our farm house!

Remember in January of this year when I blogged about the plans we had for 2011? One of the things on our list was getting a little farm house so we could move out to the country.  Well, yesterday afternoon we closed on the little farm house of my dreams!

A chunky 5.02 acres of land with a cute little 3bd/2ba home and a salt water pool.

I am excited to get it all painted and finished up inside and start getting some animals.  Definitely on the list are chickens, goats and another dog. We'll see what else we get once we get established.  We won't be moving in until after I have baby #2 (a few more weeks).  I'm also going to have a lot of work to do to get a nice big vegetable and herb garden growing here.  Some plants that were already on the property are these two pecan trees and the Muscadine grapevine behind them. There are also banana plants, strawberries, etc.

The previous owners used to have a garden with a little irrigation system in the area below so I may look into planting some raised square foot gardens here.

Some of you may be wondering where I will be doing my sewing and quilting... well, we've decided to have an outdoor shed/cottage built just for my crafting and video filming.  I can't wait for that too!  My own secluded space to CREATE! With a new farm house, a new baby girl, and my own creative studio I am sure I will have tons of inspiration for more projects and tutorials so this will be great for you too!

I'll keep you posted on the changes and additions to our farm home! This is such an exciting time for our little family!

Quilted Zipper Wristlet or Cosmetic Bag

As promised in last week's video I posted two video tutorials this week.  One is a cooking video which is posted on my cooking blog- Crafty Cocina. And the other is on How to Make a Quilted Zipper Wristlet or Cosmetic Bag!

Many of you have mentioned that you want to learn how to make something with a zipper.  I listened and made this tutorial just for you.  These little pouches are so versatile and can be made bigger and smaller to hold whatever you want.

I also submitted this video as an audition for a new online craft channel that you may have heard about already- My Craft Channel is a new online tv network launching this fall and it's solely dedicated to crafting shows!  I don't know about you... but I can't wait!  If I'm chosen I could be one of the hosts on their new network. Would that be awesome or what? Fingers crossed.

Here is the video tute. Enjoy!

High school reunion weekend

We are back from my 10-year high school reunion weekend in Miami, FL and I can honestly say I had a fabulous time!  The 5+ hour drive was pretty uncomfortable for my pregnant self but at least my DS behaved the whole way there.  We sat him forward facing in his car seat for the first-time ever and I think that helped keep him calm.  He looks pretty happy don't you think?

My DH and DS loooooove the beach so we had to spend one morning there.... of course!

I had a great time with old friends at my highschool reunion. The night was over way too fast.  I feel like I didn't even get a chance to catch up with everyone... luckily we have Facebook!

Now I'm home getting some rest and working on two video tutorials for this week and a few other ongoing projects I have in the works.  Stay tuned for next week.... I hope to share some big news with you all around mid-week.

Have a great weekend!

p.s.- if you have an Android phone or iPhone don't forget to download the Crafty Gemini mobile app. I guarantee you'll love it!
